SEC 04 · Bridge assistance, hull condition and fuel-side return

Commercial fleets

For a commercial operator, marine vision is a safety case and a fuel case at the same time — and the fuel case is usually the one that closes.

Context

Where this sits.

India's registered mercantile fleet is ageing, with a large replacement requirement over the next two decades. Meanwhile carbon intensity regulation has made hull condition a direct commercial variable: fouling increases drag, drag increases consumption, and consumption is now a rated and reported number.

The problems

What actually goes wrong.

  • Human factors dominate collision causation

Watch fatigue, distraction and misjudged risk of collision remain the leading contributors. A second, tireless pair of eyes changes the base rate.

  • Hull condition is guessed between drydocks

Fouling and coating breakdown accumulate invisibly, and the first hard data often arrives when the vessel is already in the dock.

  • Diver mobilisation is slow and hazardous

In-water survey by divers is expensive to schedule and carries real risk; robotic survey with structured analysis is increasingly accepted by class in its place.

  • Drydock scope is fixed too late

Findings that arrive after the yard slot is booked cannot change the plan they should have informed.

National programmes

The frameworks this work sits inside.

India's maritime and defence modernisation runs through named programmes with defined funding routes. Knowing which one a requirement belongs to is half of getting it procured.

Outcomes

  • Continuous collision-risk alerting independent of watch state
  • Hull condition trended between drydocks, not guessed
  • Drydock scope informed before the slot is fixed
  • Fouling data connected to consumption and carbon-intensity reporting
