Quality, testing and trials
How a performance claim becomes an accepted capability — and what we will put in writing before you buy anything.
Principle
An unverified claim is a liability, not a feature.
Marine perception vendors are rarely caught out on their datasheets. They are caught out at sea, in the third month, in conditions the datasheet did not mention.
So we structure engagements around measurement from the start: agreed criteria, instrumented trials, and a report that includes the failures. It is a slower sales cycle and a much better second contract.
- Criteria before trials. Detection range at stated target size, false-alarm rate per watch, latency ceiling — agreed in writing first.
- Instrumented evidence. Synchronised multi-channel capture with a GNSS/IMU time base, so both parties analyse the same data.
- Failures reported. Conditions where we did not meet criteria are in the report, with our assessment of why.
- Signed artefacts. The model that passed trials is cryptographically the model that ships.

Certification status varies by product and variant, and several items are in progress rather than complete. We will state the current certification position for any specific product and variant in writing on request — including where testing is pending.
Trials methodology
How an evaluation runs.
Operating profile definition
Platform, mounting geometry, operating area, seasonal window, target set and the decision the system must support. Two to three weeks, mostly conversation.
Acceptance criteria agreement
Quantified, testable criteria signed by both sides, including the environmental conditions under which they apply and how each will be measured.
Installation and calibration
Fit, alignment, extrinsic calibration verification against a reference target set, and a documented as-installed configuration baseline.
Instrumented trial period
Typically six to twelve weeks to capture condition variety. All channels recorded with a common time base. Ground truth established with an independent method.
Analysis and joint review
Results scored against criteria, with a working session on anything that missed. Where we can fix it by retraining, we say so and estimate the effort.
Trials report
Written to be taken to your own review board: methodology, results, deviations, failures, limitations and residual risks.
Responsible deployment
Where we insist on a human.
Some decisions should not be automated, and we would rather write that into the product than leave it to policy.
- No finding auto-publishes to a class report. MATSYA-HI triages and measures; a qualified surveyor confirms.
- No unexplained manoeuvre. Every VARUNA-AV action carries its governing rule and protected CPA in the log.
- Degraded means stop, not guess. Below the configured perception-confidence floor the vessel station-keeps and calls a human.
- Identification stays human. Our systems detect, classify and cue. Deciding what a contact is, and what to do about it, remains an operator judgement.
