Origin

We build marine perception in India, for India.

SagarAI is a Bengaluru deep-tech company building the vision systems that let ships, yards and ports see for themselves.

Why we started

The sensor was never the hard part.

Cameras are a commodity. Detection models are, increasingly, a commodity. What is not a commodity is a perception system that holds up in the Bay of Bengal in August, on a hull that vibrates, on a 24-volt bus that sags, watching for a class of vessel that Western training datasets barely contain.

We started SagarAI after watching capable imported systems underperform in Indian waters for reasons that had nothing to do with their engineering quality. They were built well, for a different sea. The models had never seen a fleet of unlit country craft at dusk off the Konkan coast, and they were never going to be retrained by a vendor eight time zones away for a customer of our size.

So the thesis is narrow and, we think, defensible: build the perception stack here, train it on this water, and be reachable by phone.

How we work

Four commitments we will be held to.

  • We quote numbers we will demonstrate

Every performance figure in our documentation is one we will reproduce at trials on your platform, under an acceptance criterion agreed in advance. If we cannot hit it in your operating area, we would rather find that out at trials than at handover.

  • We say what is not yet indigenous

Some components in our bill of materials are imported today — cooled detectors most notably. We publish where we stand and what the substitution path looks like, rather than letting a Make in India badge imply more than it should.

  • The human stays in the loop where it matters

No finding enters a class report unconfirmed. No autonomous manoeuvre executes without a logged, rule-cited justification. We build decision support that a competent professional can audit, not oracles they must trust.

  • We will tell you when you do not need us

A fair number of requirements that arrive described as computer vision problems are better solved with a procedure change, a better light, or an existing radar properly tuned. Saying so costs us a sale and earns the next three.

Leadership

Who you will actually be dealing with.

We are small enough that the founders take the technical calls themselves. Both numbers below are direct.

The wider picture

India is rebuilding its maritime capability. We want to be a useful part of it.

The Navy is moving to a fleet of 175–200 warships built almost entirely in Indian yards. Sagarmala and the maritime vision programmes are rebuilding the port estate. The Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision sets a 2047 horizon for India as a leading shipbuilding nation.

Every one of those hulls, yards and berths needs eyes. There is no good reason for those eyes to be imported.
